The Partnership for Public Service has announced that it will absorb the financially Council for Excellence in Government.

Mission to Revitalize Federal Government Gathers Momentum As Americans Turn to Government for Solutions to National Challenges

WASHINGTON – The Partnership for Public Service today announced that it will absorb the majority of the Council for Excellence in Government’s programs and staff effective February 16. This new arrangement will consolidate government reform resources and expand the Partnership’s suite of offerings. Earlier today, the Council announced that it will cease operations after 25 years.

“Making government work better has never been more important as Americans look to President Obama and his administration to rejuvenate a sluggish economy, navigate two wars, improve education and more,” said Max Stier, Partnership for Public Service president and CEO. “We are proud to continue the important work the Council for Excellence in Government started and believe that by consolidating our efforts we will be better able to make government more effective.”

“We have great confidence that the Partnership can oversee and operate these programs. This transition will allow our employees to continue their important work,” said John Macomber, chair of the Council for Excellence in Government’s Board of Trustees. “We are delighted these programs will live on and are confident they will thrive under the Partnership’s leadership.”

Among the programs moving to the Partnership is the Council’s Excellence in Government Fellows Program, an award-winning training program for talented mid-level federal career executives. Over the past 20 years the program has trained more than 2,700 federal employees.

In addition, the organization’s Senior Advisors to Government Executives (SAGE) program will be housed at the Partnership, along with activities to celebrate Public Service Recognition Week each year, beginning the first full week of May. The SAGE program creates a community of practice where former government executives offer strategic advice and support to current government CXO’s in addressing the government’s key challenges in these practice areas.

“We need innovation and leadership in government more than ever before,” said Stier. “These new programs help the Partnership serve as an even stronger resource for improving government performance and galvanizing public support.”

Most of the Council’s employees are planning to join the Partnership’s staff of nearly 50, working in areas that include government transformation, policy, education and outreach, government affairs, research, and communications.

The Partnership’s current transformation portfolio includes its Presidential Management Initiative, Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings and Annenberg Leadership Institute. Among the organization’s efforts to inspire a new generation to federal service are its Call to Serve initiative on hundreds of college and university campuses, its FedExperience program that connects baby boomers with encore federal careers, and the Service to America Medals, which honor outstanding public servants for their contributions to our nation.
